The national economy has shifted from one primarily dependent on manufacturing to one more oriented around service-based opportunities as many manufacturers have relocated oversees in search of less expensive labor. However, plenty of opportunities remain within manufacturing, as well as both traditional and non-traditional sectors, provided that the regional economy can maintain a competitive workforce with the skills necessary for existing and expected future jobs.
This goal focuses on creating and maintaining high-wage jobs in the Dothan region to achieve the goal of increasing wealth and reducing poverty rates among the Wiregrass population. As the Dothan region’s economy grows and diversifies, and higher paying jobs are created in the community to take advantage of the area’s increasingly high-skill labor force, the resulting economic impacts will be felt throughout the region. By increasing local wealth, raising per capita incomes and growing local wage rates, area officials will make great strides towards lowering area poverty rates and enhancing the quality of life of all local residents. Ultimately, a successful economic plan results in development of sustainable community prosperity, this will ensure that residents of all creeds, colors and national origins will benefit from the implementation of this Task Force’s action steps. |
