P-16+ Education Task Force Objectives and Action Steps

GOAL: Develop a quality, seamless P-16+ education structure for the Dothan City School System, Wallace Community College, Enterprise-Ozark Community College and Troy University Dothan that reflects special attention to workforce development.
Objective 1:

Work To Address Issues Of K-12 Public School Performance, Preparedness, And Perception.

Action Step:

Work with key stakeholders to seek court recognized unitary status for the Dothan City School district.
     

Action Step:

Create a system-wide educational Improvement strategy.

Action Step:

Create new and support current career focused educational opportunities.

Action Step:

Provide mentoring opportunities for adults to influence the development of area school children.


Action Step:

Explore additional funding opportunities.
     
Objective 2: Maximize the impact of the region’s higher education institutions on the local workforce and economy.
     

Action Step:

Ensure that programs at Wallace Community College are effectively aligned with the needs of local employers.
     

Action Step:

Develop specific degree opportunities at Troy University Dothan that are tied to regional economic targets and existing companies.
     

Action Step:

Expand the capacity of Troy University Dothan to positively impact the community.

Action Step:

Effectively utilize Troy University Dothan’s teacher training programs.
     
Objective 3: Provide the supportive resources necessary to develop a competitive workforce.
     

Action Step:

Effectively address the needs of the long-term unemployed, under-employed and “hidden” workforce.
     

Action Step:

Work to provide quality, affordable, accessible child care for the Dothan region.

Action Step:

Develop alternative transportation options for transit-dependent citizens.
     
Objective 4: Work to address issues of poverty, drug use and teenage pregnancy.
     

Action Step:

Create a coordinated outreach program and public campaign for at-risk youth.

Action Step:

Consider working with the United Way to organize a quarterly or bi-annual stakeholders’ forum on poverty in the Wiregrass.
     
Objective 5: Retain and attract “knowledge” workers and young college graduates in the Dothan region.
     

Action Step: 

Develop a marketing strategy aimed specifically at retaining and attracting young knowledge workers/recent college graduates.
     

Action Step:

Create a graduate-retention program for Troy University Dothan, Wallace Community College and Troy University Troy, with a focus on helping graduates find jobs in the Wiregrass.
     

Action Step:

Increase opportunities for young professionals to be engaged in the Wiregrass community.
