Quality of Life Task Force Objectives and Action Steps

GOAL: Enhance Dothan and the Wiregrass region’s quality of life (City of Dothan, Houston, Henry, Dale, Geneva and Coffee counties).
   

Objective 1:


Augment the availability of cultural amenities and arts in the Dothan region.

Action Step:

Work with the Southeast Alabama Regional Arts alliance to enhance the capacity of the Dothan region’s arts community.
     

Action Step:

Coordinate with Wallace Community College and Troy University Dothan to develop student-serving entertainment events in appropriate venues across the region.

Action Step:

Partner with Wallace Community College and Troy University Dothan to establish an arts education and crafts center, gallery and entertainment venue in the Wiregrass region.

Action Step:

Conduct a needs assessment to determine the viability of certain recreation, entertainment and arts amenities in the Wiregrass region.
     
Objective 2: Pursue effective revitalization of downtown Dothan.
     

Action Step:

Work with the City of Dothan, the Downtown Development Authority and the Downtown Group to produce a downtown development plan.
     

Action Step:

Consider hiring a full-time director for the Downtown Development Authority.
     

Action Step:

Partner with the Dothan Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce and others to produce regularly scheduled entertainment events in downtown Dothan.
     
Objective 3: Develop additional regional opportunities for outdoor recreation.
     

Action Step:

Encourage walking as part of an active lifestyle by improving sidewalks and public-space landscaping.
     

Action Step:

Create a regional green space plan that preserves and sets aside land for parks, trails and paths.
     
Objective 4: Effectively address the needs of the Wiregrass region’s senior citizen population.
     

Action Step:

Work to enhance existing senior services.
     

Action Step:

Assess the development potential of senior citizen-specific residential communities.
     

Action Step:

Maximize the impact of current and potential area retirees.
     
Objective 5: Ensure that the Dothan region’s elected, appointed and public/private leadership works to implement the community’s vision.
     

Action Step: 

Maximize the impact of current leadership development programs.
     

Action Step:

Formalize opportunities for interaction between community stakeholders and elected officials.
